Writing Locations--Carpe Tempore
Best not to be too near the kitchen -- easier to eat than to write.
Some people like to have a particular spot ---maybe an actual designated office with prim and proper desk and a tower computer locking the creativity into a structured environment ( this set up a bit of an oxymoron...) I'm not one of those . Give me a laptop or notebook (with decent keyboard--- NO on- screen touch pad please!) The freedom to move around is an imperative in my view.
Some days only comfort will do, half lying on a sofa, propped up by comfy cushions , doughnut and coffee an arm's length away.Perhaps close to a window , so flights of fancy can co-incide with the birds doing sky-rolls and backflips through the looking- glass, gliding to ground or larking it up in the sky. Better still, a swing chair outside in the garden itself where the heady aroma of scented plantings (Lilac and Daphne comes to mind) spirits the writer off on an internal journey that finally works itself out on the page.
Maybe you studied as a kid to pop tunes , white noise of a kind in the background. Nowadays , it might be anything from talk shows to classical, on iPods, radios, or the computer itself --- music or chat that can be effectively ignored when immersed in the writing but there for a respite when coming up for air every now and then. I can do 'Silence' too , just depends on the day, the hour, the minute. Currently, I'm trying to get a covered deck built , partly so that even in the rain or adverse weather , if I feel like it , I can still be outside while dabbling 'inside'. (Of course there's also the protected Char-B-Q ing factor for that particular reno).
The long and the short is , write whenever and wherever you feel like it--- when you're in the enjoyable initial phases of creation . When you've finished the first draft but get to the editing part , unfortunately you'll have to really apply yourself, and you won't enjoy that process quite so much. So: seize the moment , if not the day.
