Writing is by nature, as every writer knows , not necessarily a lonely occupation but an 'alone ' one . If there isn't a significant other to occasionally require some of your time , to break up the self- discipline or concentration that is a writer's prescious bane, then a pet is a great substitution-- an active member of the family who every hour on the hour needs some attention, whether that's a walk/ feeding/playtime because it works both ways , a refreshing interlude. Pets are the gifts that keep on giving. I'm not saying they are just another useful/element in the writer's tool box but more a companionable reward for when you are lost in creation-- they remind you of the realities of your life and environment....in a nice way. Take advantage of the love, attention, joy de vivre and boundaries a pet can impart to its owner through osmosis, propinguity, whatever. You'll both be the happier and more productive .
