I came across a writer's blog (kudos to and see : jamidavenport.com) touting the use of MS One Note for organizing your book. Being skeptical by nature, wasn't really sure if that would work for me -- a bit like excel workbook. However, once I saw the potential , even though I was writing my second book Celtic Knots at the time, I went back to my first book and started recording future references in One Note i.e. Character description-- physical traits, psychological make up etc; Locations; plot outline; cultural references etc etc. I found that by mid -book, I was referring back to my One Note notebook to be sure that from book to book , certain things were the same (it's hard to keep it all in your head, no matter how 'swelled').

So, in short I found this a good writing aid -- you might too.
