Not going to post something scary just because Hallowe'en is tomorrow. Think it might be a bit of a Covid-bust anyway , although all the pent up Covid-fatigue and frustration may create a troublesome Devil's Night (the night before Hallowe'en). Well, let's hope not ! (The world is a scarey enough place as it is at the moment, alas...) To combat any 'evil' abroad the night of the Blue Moon, I'd like to get warm and fuzzy in praise of pets, a necessity in anyone's life, but especially for writers.

On my Kracken Creations page on this site you will see an entry on painting Pet Rocks--a relaxing, cost effective, sometimes emotional artistic pursuit-- hence the 'clever ' inversion of the title above . Seriously however, pets of any kind serve a writer well. They are always :

  • Supportive ( especially when a cookie is dangled in front of their nose)

  • Insist on 'Play' breaks- diversions are a necessity every now and then for a writer's mental and physical refreshment

  • Affectionate , forbearing, forgiving and persistent, no matter the number of times they hear: ' Not NOW !'

  • Companionable 'Foodies': writers like armies, run on their stomachs, and a dog's internal clock chimes the dining hour to the minute ( I wouldn't give a farthing for a Swiss watch ...)

  • Reminds writers there's more to life than the current 'writing exercise'.

The demand for pets of all kinds has skyrocketed since the Covid 'Lock-down'. I can only hope the interest is genuine , and that new owners realize the investment in time, money, but most importantly love. These animals are not to be discarded once the plague passes over -- they are sentient, loving beings that suffer when owners are not thoughtfully caring and as affectionate as they are. It is better NOT to take on a pet for your own selfish needs if you are not going to reciprocate in kind, but if you do--

what rewards you will reap for your kindness !
