After much floundering with image sizing, researching articles on kindle direct publishing etc etc finally found some relatively simple instructions . See HOW TO FORMAT YOUR BOOK FOR KINDLE USING MICROSOFT WORD IN 6 EASY STEPS February 11, 2013 By NINA AMIR . Yes, it's older and Kindle has changed a bit I'm sure, but I just wanted someone to point me in the direction with some simple instruction and I found this helped.
After doing all the prerequisites , ie. typesetting styles, TOC development etc I took the final step to convert to Mobi files which Kindle supports. I used a program called Zamzar, a free program I found instead of the ones Nina mentioned in her article ---perhaps it didn't exist then, when she wrote the thing .
So I now have a mobi file. What to do with it ? Well, make sure you have a KDP account and do a preview of your e-book. For me , this could be problematic as don't have a kindle but will try to view on computer regardless before final upload to KDP. It ought to show any formatting problems that still exist which hopefully can be corrected satisfactorily....
Post Script: It takes a while to download Kindle Preview, just be forewarned. Once done however, I uploaded the Zamzar 'mobi' file. It came out 'nonsense'. Message on Kindle was to upload my original Word document , which I did. Voila. I could look at it on tablet/phone/whatever view. On one screen I had it, and on another , I had my original word doc. I could see where sometimes the word doc didn't translate to Kindle, just little things though , as I 'd done the prep ahead of time. The TOC worked and transported to correct Chapter Headings. When a proper name came along, a footnote was inserted which was problematic as I have a Glossary, not footnotes but not worrying about it if I can't get rid. I had to go through my whole document to check various aspects: page breaks, images (and image sizes in jpg), etc etc. I corrected on original word doc and uploaded again. Hopefully this will be the final upload in preview.
